What is the difference between overhead Travelling crane and gantry crane?


Bridge cranes and gantry cranes are both lifting equipment used in a variety of industries to move heavy objects. Although they look similar, there are distinct differences between the two that make them suitable for different applications.

Gantry cranes are typically used in outdoor environments such as shipyards, construction sites and railway warehouses. They feature tall A-frame structures with horizontal beams that support removable carts. Gantry cranes are designed to span objects or work spaces, allowing them to move heavy loads easily over a large area. Their mobility and versatility make them ideal for outdoor applications where there is no existing overhead crane support structure.

Bridge cranes are installed on an elevated runway within a building or structure. They are commonly used in warehouses, manufacturing facilities and assembly lines to lift and transport materials across runways. Overhead cranes are known for their efficiency in maximizing floor space and precisely controlling the movement of heavy objects within a limited area.

One of the main differences between the two types of cranes is their support structure. Gantry cranes are self-supporting and do not require a building or existing structure for installation, whereas overhead cranes rely on a building’s frame or support columns for installation. Additionally, gantry cranes are typically used in outdoor applications where maneuverability and flexibility are critical, while overhead cranes are more commonly used indoors for repetitive lifting and moving tasks.

In terms of load capacity, both types of cranes can be designed to lift extremely heavy loads, but the specific requirements of each application will determine the appropriate type of crane to be used.
